I often find myself searching for shapes and patterns in my everyday life, and the ways in which I can incorporate them into my work; seeking out dashes of colour in what could be seen to some as a dreary city; looking for textured surfaces on my walk to college. The area I live in has influenced my work for the past couple of years and even though recent projects have focused on different locations, it always loops back around to my street in Hull. A recent project of mine, titled ‘Retrospective Happiness’, revolved around reflecting on the past, looking back in retrospect on a time where I was happier than I knew; It’s easy to pursue contentment in vain, but often times our happiest memories occur when we least expect them to. Within this project I made reference to multiple artists, but the most impactful of the bunch would have been Hilma af klint, who’s work inspired me in the most memorable way – her use of colour and line is admirable. Within my current project, I continue to study fine artists, even though my main focus is textiles, and I’m currently looking at the work of Thomas Nozcowski.
